WHICH HORMONES CAUSE MELASMA?

Hormonal balance is the cause of melasma but there are many hormones working in the body. It is important to know that which hormones are responsible for this disorder. There are two hormones responsible for the melasma. These are:

  • Progesterone.
  • Estrogen.

Progesterone is found in males while estrogen is found in females. The majority of melasma cases are found in females. 70% of cases are found in females while male’s cases are only 30%.

Why Females Face Melasma More Than Males?

Hormonal imbalance is found in females more than males. Males usually do not face hormonal imbalance. A very small number of males get melasma due to hormonal imbalance. Females face this issue a lot due to menstrual cycle and pregnancy.

Women go through pregnancy and menstruation. The estrogen level disturbs and goes up and down. This disturbance leads to hyper-pigmentation in skin and cause melasma. Researches say that almost 80% of women face melasma during their pregnancy time. After they give birth to a baby, the dark patches from their face fade after some time.

Can Progesterone Cause Melasma?

Yes, progesterone can also cause melasma. The melanin production in the body of males is controlled by this hormone. Some disturbances in the body cause the over production of melanin and cause hyper-pigmentation. This hyper-pigmentation cause the production of dark patches on skin which cause melasma.
